My Research.

Marine population research in Mossel Bay, South Africa. Focused species include sharks (great white sharks, catsharks, ragged-tooth sharks, blue sharks, and mako sharks), and nudibranchs.

Catshark Research

Field research on shark behavior in Mossel Bay, South Africa. Shark species researched on dives include catsharks (Pyjama, Puffadder, Dark, Leopard, and Brown catsharks), mako sharks, blue sharks, and

ragged-tooth sharks.

Research focuses on shark behavior in accordance to inter-specific and intra-specific dominance and human interaction while diving. The ongoing goal of his project is to provide an ethogram for safe diving with shark species. The purpose is to encourage divers towards the conservation of sharks and change the world's negative rhetoric on sharks, one diver at a time.

Nudibranch Surveys

Surveys for population dynamics of other marine life in the Bay, including the 30+ species of nudibranchs. Species identification, behavior, and individual parameters are noted in accordance with environmental data. New species are identified almost every day.

NAUI Clean Ocean diver briefings are taught to participants before cleanup dives are performed. Emphasis on safe protocol for the reef and divers. Data is collected on ghost gear and pollution collected along with environmental data.

NAUI Shark Diver Course

I am the creator of an instructor specialty course called NAUI Shark Diver course at Go Dive Mossel Bay. My goal with this course is to teach students the importance of sharks to our marine ecosystems through hands-on diving experience. Providing knowledge on the biology and behavior of safe shark diving will give students hands-on experience to change the negative rhetoric on sharks.

The course is focused on the shark species of Mossel Bay. However, this course can be adapted to any species in your local area.

Data collection, behavior ethograms, marine ecosystem health, and environmental parameters are collected on each dive. By understanding local shark populations, species-specific and individual-specific behavior, and the human impact on our reefs will allow us to conserve and dive safer with local species.
